Post by shakil1567 »

The history of social media has a long series until it finally became an inseparable part of human life today. Going back far, there are several versions of the history of social media being first created. The order of this history depends on the understanding of social media that is understood and the popularity of social media itself among the general public.

Social Media Concept
There are several definitions quoted from the opinions of experts. The first concept special database comes from BK Lewis, who said that social media is a label that refers to digital technology that has the potential to make everyone connected and interact and share messages. This concept is explained in a book entitled Social Media and Strategic Communication Attitudes and Perceptions among College Students.

There is also Chris Brogan's opinion in his book entitled Social Media 101: Tactics and Tips to Develop Your Business, he states that social media is a communication tool that contains various possibilities for creating new forms of interaction styles.

Next, there is the concept of social media from Dave Kerpen which is contained in a book entitled Likeable Social Media. According to D Kerpen, social media is a place for a collection of images, videos, writings to interactive relationships in a network. These relationships can be formed between individuals or between groups.

From the three definitions, we can conclude that social media is a medium of interaction with the help of digital technology. However, in the three definitions there are differences that affect the understanding of the history of social media.

History of Social Media and the Cold War
Quoting from Gramedia , social media was “born” on May 24, 1844, starting with a series of electronic dots and lines typed on a telegraph machine. Samuel Morse, the inventor of the telegraph machine, sent a message through his machine for the first time to the public.

Referring to this history, messages sent to the public using the latest technology at that time, can be categorized as the first history of social media. In addition, later on the telegraph became a communication device.

Stepping into 1962, the roots of today's digital world were born, namely the Intergalactic Computer Network. This network was created by the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (Arpanet) funded by the US Department of Defense to connect scientists from four universities with the aim of sharing software, hardware, and other data.

In 1987, the National Science Foundation created a national digital network called NSFNET and after a decade they launched their first social media-like communication platform to the public.

However, based on The History of Social Networking on the Digital Trends page, in the 1980s to 1990s, the development and growth of the internet gave rise to other online communication services, such as CompuServe, America Online, and Prodigy. These media allow users to interact via email, bulletin board messages, and even real-time chatting .
